Windows 7: Make the Taskbar "Never combine, but HIDE labels"

Make the Taskbar "Never combine, but HIDE labels"

I'm not completely sure if this is the right section of the forums to post in, but seeing as i haven't seen this method of taskbar "customization" mentioned anywhere, or in any screen shots, i figured i would go ahead and post.

As much as i like the new Windows 7 taskbar (which is pretty amazing), I thought there had to be a better way to still utilize the nice icons, but not have to deal with the ugly rectangular labels that were present in past versions of windows (they look kind of fat on the new taskbar, and turning on small icons makes the start orb jut out oddly ).

But i found a way!
All that needs to be done is add a string called “MinWidth” to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics” and set to 54(56?) then restart, and bada-bing badda-boom, the "Golden" Taskbar.

Never Combine, Hide Labels

Windows 7 does not have a "Never Combine, Hide Labels" option in the taskbar settings, but a lot of people would like to have this option. I have not seen instructions posted anywhere, so here is how to make Windows 7 never group taskbar icons but also hide the labels:

1. Go to your taskbar properties and set Taskbar Buttons to "Never Combine".

2. Launch REGEDIT and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetri cs

3. Create a new String Value and call it MinWidth.

4. Modify the string properties and set the value to 56.

5. Restart your computer, and now Windows 7 will never combine icons, but it will also hide the labels.

If you are unhappy with the changes simply delete the MinWidth key and change back to "Always Combine, Hide Labels"

I hope this helps some of you out.

September 4th, 2009 Edit:

The MinWidth value should be set to 56, NOT 54 as I originally posted. Setting the value to 54 results in disappearing icons on the taskbar when it becomes heavily populated with icons. Setting the value to 56 prevents icons from disappearing.
